A friend of mine introduced me to a functional language called Elixir. He told me he thought I would really enjoy it based on the way I like to write C# (this was mostly because of how much I love LINQ). I looked into it and after doing a few simple programs I was hooked. The community was great, the docs were fantastic and my excitement for programming ignited once again.

I knew it would be tough to find someone to hire me when I no production experience with Elixir but I just happened to stumble across a tweet from the co-founder of Remote. He was letting people know that they wanted to hire experienced engineers with no Elixir experience, and that they would put them through an Elixir bootcamp. I couldn't believe this was real! I am proud to say that I was the first engineer to complete the bootcamp.

Since joining Remote, I have not only learned Elixir, but now actively mentor other engineers, grade code challenges and conduct interviews. I've been part of three teams that have had a broad impact across other product and engineering teams. I also have the opportunity work with folks from Australia, Bosnia, Poland, Portugal and Taiwan to just name a few. A while back I was featured in a blog series on Remote's website, you can check that out here.

TEAM: KNOWLEDGE DATABASE

  • Responsible for creating a single source of truth for data that would be shared to a wide variety of internal and external locations. This data included country specific details of employment requirements and other details.

  • Using the newly created Knowledge Database, we created a Cost Calculator that could build an estimate of how much it costs to employ folks in specific countries. This was originally created for internal sales but quickly was altered to also be used for employers within the product, and now a limited version of the tool is available for free on the public website.
